Ooooooooohhhhhhh Carolina fans, what do you do with that one? That was the type of game where afterwards, you are flooded with texts, calls, and emails from State fans you probably haven't heard from all year. You probably haven't heard from most of them for a lot longer than that. Some communications may have been from friends, but if not, perhaps they were from the worst kind of people. The kind of fans that weren't even sure what time the Wolfpack was playing on most Saturdays. These fans rank right up there with people who go to games and wear the jersey of a team not even involved in the contest. But guess what, you had to take it.

We should all stop short of saying that this season will be all for naught if North Carolina can't beat North Carolina State this weekend but let's be honest, Carolina needs to beat State this weekend. And further, Butch Davis needs to beat State. He's never done it as head coach at North Carolina and as a result State has won the last two in a row.

A few weeks back, on this very site, I implored the Carolina fan base to relax, chill out and give Butch Davis and his coaching staff time to do their work. Davis and company quickly responded by dropping an ugly game to Virginia. At home. For the 50th year in a row. And oh yeah, Virginia was winless at the time. Sweet. So I had to follow up that post with another one a week later telling the Heels fans it was still too early to freak out. These freak out articles come up at least once a season because fans instinctively freak out at least once a season and it almost always happens too soon (keep an eye out for my note to Carolina basketball fans).

For the second year in a row, North Carolina will have major lineup shift as it enters the final games on its schedule. Last year, quarterback T.J. Yates was reinserted into the lineup against N.C. State after backup Cam Sexton led the Tar Heels to a 5-2 record subbing for Yates. The immediate results were brutal. Yates had his worst game of the year, and so did everyone else wearing Carolina blue. N.C. State suffocated the entire Tar Heel team and boat-raced the Heels in Kenan Stadium
This time around, North Carolina will be replacing starting running back Shaun Draughn with backup Ryan Houston.

You're sick of hearing about Duke, aren't you? You're tired of all the jawing and praise for this high scoring, dominating offense and opportunistic defense. You could go the rest of the year without hearing about this record setting senior leader the Blue Devils have, their "quarterback" if you will. Except this time around people really are talking about an actual quarterback, on a football field. Playing at Duke. Playing for Duke.
You're already tired of it aren't you Tar Heels?

Was the fourth-quarter fourth-down call with just over four minutes remaining last Thursday night against Florida State the defining call of the North Carolina football season? It certainly was a big decision in that game.

North Carolina and Florida State are set to meet tonight under the lights in Kenan Stadium. One program is fighting to stay relevant and the other is striving to become a major player on the college football landscape.

This might not be a surprise to anyone who follows the North Carolina Tar Heels in football but, for this current squad to be successful, it's defense might have to change some games. Which is exactly what it did, for the first time all season last weekend against Georgia Southern.
The good news is that the defense forced turnovers and scored. The bad news is that it was against Georgia Southern.
