So honestly, how big is 28-27?
Well, put it this way, in one single point, Wolfpack Nation found something to hold onto.

Saturday, we find out what N.C. State is truly made of.
On paper, State has NOTHING to play for at Virginia Tech this weekend. NADA. ZILCH. NIL. And that’s exactly what makes a seemingly meaningless game at least semi-interesting.

N.C. State has already seen its roster shredded by injuries, its defense dismantled by big plays and its season doused in disappointment. Now, over the next three weeks, the Wolfpack can flip the script.
Three games remaining, three opponents still with much to play for, three pride-salvaging, hope-inducing opportunities for the ‘Pack to spoil some ACC rivals’ holiday parties. Here’s the order, what’s at stake for each and why all three – experts be darned – are winnable:

It’s convenient, and largely accurate, to hurl all sorts of criticism at Tom O’Brien and his team after N.C. State’s latest ACC pitfall, 45-42 at Florida State:
- “Can’t stop their own shadow, forget Christian Ponder and a volatile ‘Nole offense”
- “Secondary torched…again”
- “Not enough pure talent and speed to keep up”
- “Finding ways to lose” (see previous three conference games)
But the one insult you can’t hurl at State after last Saturday’s wild loss is that it’s heartless.

Entering the 2009 campaign, this “humble” blogger confidently asserted that if, after seven games, N.C. State resided anywhere south of 5-2, the team would have colossally underachieved and the season would be stuck in mud.
Well, State is 3-4 (0-3 ACC), with all of one win over an FBS school (how again did it beat 7-1 Pittsburgh?). Forget spinning in the mud, the season is threatening to plunge straight into the abyss.

From the minute David Cutcliffe brought his sauntering SEC swagger to Durham, we knew it was only a matter of time before long-dormant Duke woke up. When the Blue Devils throttled Virginia 31-3 in the opening month of 2008, we could sense a breakthrough. After Duke hung with the mighty Hokies of Virginia Tech two weeks ago, the uprising seemed inevitable. N.C. State fans – fuming and flummoxed by their team’s stumble at Wake Forest – could only hope that the signature win didn’t arrive at their expense.
Well, it did, and not just any signature. A masterstroke from Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis that canvassed Carter-Finley in royal blue.

Wade through all the exuberance and hyperbole following N.C. State’s 38-31 sizzler against Pittsburgh and Tom O’Brien was, unfortunately for Wolfpack Nation, dead on. Yes, Russell Wilson was brilliant, and no, any coach worth his Navy stripes wouldn’t dare minimize a win…especially one against a BCS foe.
But Obie’s bottom line is what bottomed out State in Winston-Salem last week: the Wolfies aren’t a good enough team to make so many mistakes and consistently get away with it.

The headline and the box score just don’t jibe. One reads “Pack Rallies for 38-31 Win over Pittsburgh.” The other reports that the rallier amassed 530 yards of total offense and 37:07 of possession time, outdistancing the frontrunner by 230 yards (114 rushing), 16 first downs and 14 minutes T.O.P.
How are N.C. State fans and players alike supposed to react to a game story like that?! Jubilantly? Confusedly? Frustratingly? Yes, yes and yes.

On a college football Saturday lacking Hollywood glamour (ESPN’s College Gameday is following unranked Iowa for heaven’s sake), the ACC has every opportunity to soak up some much-needed spotlight.Frankly, it has little excuse not to.

Two weeks into 2009, N.C. State football is still largely a mystery. And that isn't about to change anytime soon.
