THE 2009 BCS PLAYOFFS
To not have a playoff in Division 1-A Football is the most ridiculous thing in the world. At every other level of NCAA Football and in every other collegiate sport they have playoffs. It simply makes no sense.
Sure, Alabama is the best team in the country . But you will have no luck convincing me that Texas is better than TCU. And how can Cincinnati and Boise State win every game they play and have no chance? Are there season's meaningless? Favoritism would be expected under the guidance of people like Joe Stalin and Fidel Castro but this is America, Jack! Isn't this the land of OPPORTUNITY?!?!?!?!?!?!
The current system stinks.
Here are the most common justifications that school presidents make:
- Class time: WHAT the #@^% ? Football players play on SATURDAY!!! Golf, Tennis, and Baseball players miss a tremendous amount of class time during their seasons. Basketball players forget where their classes are in March. Missed class time asserts a double standard.
-Carrying the season in to the spring semester: Guess that’s no problem for basketball players, right? Give me a break. Regardless, in my arrangement it wouldn’t go any longer than it does now.
-Too many games: Why condone App State (and other smaller level teams) playing 16 games every year? Seriously, that makes no sense. And don’t give me the whole “they would get injured” because they are bigger than FCS (1-AA) players. I can guarantee that there’s at least as big of a difference between App’s and Sewanee’s ( Division 3 team) players as there is between Alabama’s and App’s.
Honestly folks, I can’t think of any reason not to have a playoff. If you’ve got one please email me immediately. Taylor@curtismedia.com.
Here’s my format:
-Have an eight team playoff using the current BCS points system. The six BCS Conference champions and the two highest ranked at large schools qualify. You would simply use the current BCS rankings to determine how each team would be seeded. However, at large seeds are adjusted so that two schools from the same conference don’t play each other in the quarterfinals.
-Quarterfinal games are played on the home field of the top four seeds. Those teams earned that privilege. The semifinals and championship games would use the current BCS games on a rotating basis. There are now five BCS games, but I would cut that back to four. Using my plan to rotate the semifinals and finals, one of the four bowls would be left out each year. However, that game would host the best two teams that didn't make the playoffs (it is all explained below). Although we wouldn't need it this season, we have gotten rid of the idiotic rule that says only two teams from a specific conference are permitted.
So if it happened this year (my winners included):
THE QUARTERFINALS
Fri, Dec 18th at 8pm: #2 Texas vs. #7 Ohio State
Sat, Dec 19th at 1pm: #3 Cincinnati vs. #6 Oregon
Sat, Dec 19th at 5pm: #1 Alabama vs. #8 Georgia Tech
Sat, Dec 19th at 9pm: #4 TCU vs. #5 Florida
THE SEMIFINALS
Tue, Dec 29th at 8pm: #2 Texas vs. #6 Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl
Wed, Dec 30th at 8pm: #1 Alabama vs. #4 TCU in the Sugar Bowl
THE OTHER BCS GAME (The left out Bowl)
Fri, Jan 1st at 8pm: Boise State defeats Iowa in the Orange Bowl
THE BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in Pasadena
Thu, Jan 7th at 8pm: #1 Alabama beats #6 Oregon
Now I know you're going to say "where's Boise?" They would clearly be the team snubbed by my formula. Unfortunately their schedule strength (they played UC-Davis) would kill their chances. In fact, Florida has a comfortable margin over Boise State in the current BCS system.
If you honestly don't think this is a better plan, or can't admit how exciting this would be please contact a mental physician ASAP.
