This weill be short, as I spent the first two periods in the friendly confines of my couch trying to shake an annoying cold.  Unfortunately, I picked the wrong night to stay home, as the Canes played their best game in the three weeks since Paul Maurice took over behind the bench, outplaying the Florida Panthers in every facet of the game and staking a firm claim to second place in the Southeast Division by beating the Panthers 2-1 in overtime.

If you were to ask the Canadian media who the three stars were after the Canes' 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens, the answer would undoubtedly be the two referees, who were the story of the game's first two periods.  They awarded eleven power plays to the Canes, and the Canes cashed in on three of them, enough to power the Canes to a win in the first game of a two-game homestand.

The Carolina Hurricanes had a chance to not only eat into the six-point separation between them and the Washington Capitals on Sunday, but they could also take three of a possible four points from a very tricky back-to-back at the RBC Center.  After giving up a point to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, the Canes fought through a tough game against the Caps and emerged with a 3-1 victory that was much closer than the score indicated.  The win was Paul Maurice's 269th as the Canes' coach, but his first since reassuming the position on Wednesday.

In the midst of three home games in four nights, the Carolina Hurricanes looked a lot better in game two of the second Paul Maurice era than they did in game one.  They did get a point out of the game, but lost 2-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday in what most players (and the coach) considered a building-block game where more things went well than went poorly.  Those building blocks are sorely needed, with the division leader waiting in the wings for a showdown on Sunday.

Meet the new Canes, same as the old Canes.  On Paul Maurice's second debut night behind the Hurricanes' bench, the team looked very similar to the last games of the Peter Laviolette regime.  The Pittsburgh Penguins, arguably the most opportunistic in the Eastern Conference, took a 5-2 decision from the Canes in a game that visibly demonstrated the multitude of difficult challenges facing the new coaching staff.

After sleeping on yesterday's events overnight, I can see two distinct reactions taking shape in response to the Canes' firing of Peter Laviolette and re-hiring of Paul Maurice.

A shakeup in the Canes' coaching ranks was not unexpected, and that shakeup came to pass on Wednesday.  What was unexpected -- and, frankly, shocking to anyone who has even a passing interest in the team -- was that the new voice behind the bench is an old friend to the organization.

Another three-game losing streak has fallen upon the Carolina Hurricanes.  The Philadelphia Flyers skated out of the RBC Center with a 3-1 victory that again saw the Canes play 40 minutes of solid hockey, but lose the game in the other 20.  Much has been asked about the Canes' identity so far this year, and over the last few games the identity has been revealed to be maddeningly inconsistent.

Coming into Sunday's matchup against the Nashville Predators with a three-game winning streak in their back pocket, the last thing the Carolina Hurricanes wanted was to lay an egg before the home crowd.  Unfortunately for them, the Canes never got their legs under them, despite five early power plays, and they dropped a listless 5-2 decision to the Predators in a relative snoozer.

The Carolina Hurricanes' first three-game winning streak of the season came courtesy of their most snakebitten player.  Eric Staal's hat trick propelled the Canes to a 5-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes, the Canes' first game since November 4th in which they scored more than two goals in regulation.  Three would have been sufficient, but a huge weight was lifted off the team's shoulders with Staal handling the goal-scoring duties in this one.
